Mike Portnoy Melody Master Signature Snare Drums from Tama

Tama’s Melody Master snare line features a set of signature snare drums representing Mike Portnoy, Dream Theater’s progressive powerhouse drummer. Luckily for Mr. Portnoy, he was granted the honor of having not just one, but two, signature snare drums named after him and built to his personalized specifications.

Directly influenced by the name of his daughter, Melody, both Melody Master snare drums contain beautiful design features, expert construction, and a well-rounded sound in all ranges. Although a slight over-ring persisted through the side snare, both drums provide moments of sonic brilliance in their sound. Either would make a great addition to a high-end drum kit.

Though signature equipment doesn’t suit every player’s tastes, you don’t have to be in search of Mike Portnoy’s progressive drum sound in order to find pleasing characteristics in these impressive drums.

FEATURES

The two Melody Master snare drums reviewed were the standard MP1455 5.5×14” snare as well as the smaller MP125 5×12” side-snare. Both drums arrived in perfect condition and included a specialized (a.k.a beautiful!) drum key.

The MP1455 has quite an amazing appearance! It contains a thick, maple shell with a semi-gloss black covering on both the interior and exterior of the drum. The outside of the drum includes an alluring purple & white Mike Portnoy signature logo superimposed over the Dream Theater Majesty symbol. In addition, stamped and/or branded into the outer finish of the drum is that same Majesty logo (in black) arranged in numerous positions and various sizes all around the shell.

The shell of the MP125 was a hammered flat-black steel (with obvious, visible hammer markings all around the drum). Though not incorporated with the same branded imprints around the shell, the drum still contained the attractive purple & white Portnoy signature logo.

Both drums contained very bright/shiny die-cast chrome hoops on either side, Tama MSL-SCT chrome lugs (eight on the standard snare, six on the side snare). Note: the lugs are offset on the MP125 to fit the smaller size of the drum. The snares feature an MCS100A three-way tension adjustable snare strainer. The strainer contained two separate throw-offs on one single device in order to allow for multiple variations of snare tension(s) as well as to provide an opportunity for “switching” between two separate snare drums (on the same drum).

Last, each drum came equipped with a Remo coated Ambassador (single-ply) top head and a Remo clear Ambassador snare-side head on the bottom.

USABILITY

The drums are built extremely well and standard maintenance (e.g, tuning) was very simple – each drum was very responsive to even just the slightest change. However, the three-way tension strainer caused a bit of confusion. Although very easy to use (the throw-offs themselves were high-quality and behaved normally), the tensioning itself was a bit hard to control at first glance.

Perhaps after a sufficient amount of time using these drums, we would have an easier time finding the optimal balance of tension between the two adjustable tension knobs. But for first time users, the various tension options could cause uncertainty in regards to which tightness is needed at what time. We found it challenging to find a perfect and consistent balance between both sides of the strainer, even if the principle of a three-way strainer is to yield more tension options.

SOUND

The first drum of the two tested was the standard MP1455. As with previous snare tests, we began testing the drum from the lowest pitch up to a higher pitch. Starting in the lower range, the drum produced a surprisingly full sound (for such a low range). However, similar to many snare drums, the open-low pitch of the drum caused an excess of buzzing from the snares, even after experimenting with the tension adjustments of the specialized snare throw-off.

As we moved up to a mid-range tuning for the drum, it responded very nicely! The drum gave off a well-rounded, full sound with a slight “pop” to it as well. In addition, the overabundance of buzz from the snares seemed to level out.

Lastly, when brought up to a pitch at the higher range of the drum, it produced a terrific combination of a full tone mixed with a bright, strong “pop.” One last note: with the exception of some slight issues in the lower range, the drum had a great control of ring and/or additional noise, producing a clear, fundamental tone through most of its tuning span.

Moving on to the MP125 side-snare, the tuning process was handled in the same fashion as the previous standard snare drum. The lowest range of the drum behaved similarly to the MP1455, producing a great tone (again, a surprisingly full sound!) but containing the same overabundance of buzzy-snare issues and tensioning challenges. Fortunately, the pitch range for any side-snare is more appropriate in the higher range of the drum.

The mid-range of the drum produced a much more pleasing and recognizable “pop” of a side-snare and, again, the buzz of the snares were brought under control. However (most likely due to the finish of the shell), a reasonable amount of “brassy” over-ring was generated from tuning the drum to the middle of its range.

Lastly, moving up to the high register of the drum allowed for the characteristic side-snare “crack” that is consistent with drums this size. The drum emitted a very strong, full and loud “pop” with a good balance of a well-rounded sound mixed together. Unfortunately, though improved from the middle range of the drum, the “brassy” over-ring did not entirely disappear. Though it wasn’t completely obtrusive, it was a characteristic that did stand out through a variety of ranges for this drum.

Many players are drawn to these snare drums because of their namesake, and you may be wondering whether or not these drums will really give you the Portnoy signature sound. While testing and playing these snare drums, they definitely evoked Mike’s particular sound. Especially on more recent recordings (most notably since his drums don’t have many, if any, sampled additions on the tracks), both of these snares have a recognizable tone to what the listener can hear from Mike’s playing. The real beauty to us, and another positive point, is that the drums remain very fitting in various musical situations and will appeal to a range of drummers far beyond the progressive rock/metal focus.

Documentation and Product Support

The two Melody Master snare drums arrived with a small amount of paperwork that unfortunately didn’t specifically pertain to these drums. The documentation included was a brief synopsis of the Tama Starcast Mounting System (mainly relevant to a drum set configuration) and was ironically only printed in Japanese.

Fortunately, a good amount of information on these drums was found on the Internet both on Mike Portnoy’s personal webpage as well on Tama’s website. Given that Tama is a major manufacturer in the drum industry, through minor research effort, information and product support for these specialty snares is readily available.

PRICE

The Mike Portnoy Melody Master Signature 5×12″ steel shell snare (MSRP $459.99) sells for approximately $300. The 5 1/2×14″ maple shell snare (MSRP $869.99) sells for $570.

Often times, the prices of signature snares can be a bit costly due to the extra care and additional details put into a personalized design. In the case of the Melody Master series, while somewhat pricey, we think these drums provide a decent value given the high quality construction and pro-level sound.

Charity Auction Series to Begin May 5th

Syracuse, NY – An Ebay auction beginning on Monday, May 5th will kick off the second wave of the Dream Theater Charity Auction Series to benefit Camp Good Days and Special Times. Camp Good Days is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children, adults and families whose lives have been touched by cancer and other life threatening challenges. For 29 years, Camp Good Days has been providing free residential camping programs at their Recreational Facility in Branchport, New York as well as year-round support activities. Such an accomplishment would never be possible without friends like Dream Theater and events like this charity auction.

Since August 2007, Dream Theater has been donating band-related memorabilia to Camp Good Days in an effort to raise funds and awareness for Camp via a series of Ebay auctions. The Dream Theater Charity Auction Series generally runs in conjunction with the band’s tour dates and so will begin May 5th, as the band reconvenes it’s “Chaos in Motion” Tour.

The items being auctioned in the coming weeks will include (but not be limited to) an autographed copy of Dream Theater’s newest CD, “Greatest Hit (and 21 other pretty cool songs)”, compliments of Rhino Records and a band- and author-autographed copy of Rich Wilson’s Dream Theater biography, “Lifting Shadows”. Perhaps the pinnacle of the auction series will be a “Music Man” John Petrucci-model guitar, which Ernie Ball has generously built and donated for this cause. Autographed tour shirts and tour books will be auctioned intermittently as well; hopefully creating different price levels for potential bidders.

“Well, three DT items were added to iTunes today….
And iTunes f*cked up 2 of the 3!! (ugh….why us???????)

Forsaken EP (with 2 live tracks) – this one seems to be correct…(however because of some ridiculous iTunes EP rule, we weren’t allowed to include the live version of TDEN because it was “too long”….)

Greatest Hit (and 21 other pretty cool songs) – Disc 2 seems to be labelled incorrectly on this….so you have to relabel it yourself or wait a day or two for them to correct it.

Greatest Hit (and 5 other pretty cool videos) – that’s right! The first 6 DT promo videos are now available on iTunes – unfortunately the actual “greatest hit” itself (Pull Me Under) is currently missing from the bundle….once again, this should be fixed in the coming days….

Don’t get me wrong, I love and support iTunes and find it an incredibly convenient way of shopping for music….but it isn’t exactly DT-friendly!!!

Greatest Hit (…and 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs) is a compilation album by progressive metal band Dream Theater.

The title alludes to their only Top-10 radio hit, “Pull Me Under“. It features three songs from their breakthrough album Images and Words remixed by Kevin Shirley: “Pull Me Under“, “Take the Time“, and “Another Day“. It also features the song “To Live Forever“, from the Images and Words sessions and B-side of the “Lie” single, which was previously unreleased on studio albums. Several single edits are also featured on this compilation.

The songs have been divided in two discs: the first one, dubbed “The Dark Side“, features heavy, metal-influenced songs, while the second one, entitled “The Light Side“, spotlights the band’s melodic side. The set spans the years from 1991 to 2005, therefore it doesn’t include any songs from Dream Theater’s debut album, When Dream and Day Unite, or from their latest release, Systematic Chaos.

Dream Theater adalah salah satu grup progressive metal paling terkemuka di dunia saat ini. Didirikan oleh Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci dan John Myung, mereka telah merilis delapan album studio, empat rekaman live dan satu album pendek (EP). Album pertama mereka, When Dream And Day Unite direkam dengan Charlie Dominici sebagai vokalis dan Kevin Moore sebagai pemain keyboards. Dominici berusia jauh lebih tua daripada anggota lainnya dan ingin memainkan musik yang lain, sehingga ia kemudian keluar dari grup. Mereka kemudian mencari pengganti yang ideal selama 2 tahun sampai akhirnya bertemu dengan James LaBrie, vokalis dari Kanada melalui audisi.

Bersama LaBrie mereka merekam Images And Words yang melambungkan nama mereka ke jajaran internasional dengan hit “Pull Me Under” dan “Another Day”. Awake adalah album terakhir mereka dengan Moore yang kemudian digantikan oleh Derek Sherinian untuk album Falling Into Infinity. Pada akhirnya Sherinian juga digantikan oleh Jordan Rudess dan formasi ini masih bertahan sampai hari ini. Mereka telah meluncurkan album konsep Metropolis 2: Scenes From A Memory dan album ganda Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence. Pada tahun 2003 mereka memutuskan untuk merekam album non-konsep Train Of Thought yang sangat dipengaruhi oleh grup thrash metal seperti Metallica.

Album terbaru mereka yang berjudul Octavarium dikeluarkan pada tanggal 7 Juni 2005 dan selain merupakan album studio kedelapan juga mengandung delapan lagu.

Setelah Dream Theater meluncurkan album Live mereka dalam memperingati 20 tahun Dream Theater terbentuk yang berjudul Score yang direkam pada tanggal 1 April 2006 di Radio City Music Hall,US. Mereka kembali bersiap meluncurkan album ke sembilan mereka dengan membawa bendera label record baru yaitu RoadRunner Records, mereka telah merampungkan album Systematic Chaos yang berisi 8 lagu.

Sejarah
Dream Theater dibentuk pada bulan September 1985, ketika gitaris John Petrucci dan bassis John Myung memutuskan untuk membentuk sebuah band untuk mengisi waktu luang mereka ketika bersekolah di Berklee College of Music di Boston. Mereka lalu bertemu seorang pemain drum, Mike Portnoy, di salah satu ruang latihan di Berklee, dan setelah dua hari negosiasi, mereka berhasil mengajak Mike Portnoy untuk bergabung. Setelah itu, mereka bertiga ingin mengisi dua tempat kosong di band tersebut, dan Petrucci bertanya kepada teman band, Kevin Moore, untuk menjadi pemain keyboard. Dia setuju, dan ketika Chris Collins diajak untuk menjadi vokalis, band tersebut sudah komplit.

Dengan lima anggota, mereka memutuskan untuk menamai band tersebut dengan nama Majesty. Menurut dokumentasi DVD Score, mereka berlima sedang mengantri tiket untuk konser Rush di Berklee Performance Center ketika mendengarkan Rush dengan boom box. Portnoy lalu berkata bahwa akhiran dari lagu tersebut (Bastille Day) terdengar sangat “majestic”. Pada saat itulah mereka memutuskan Majesty adalah nama yang bagus untuk sebuah band, dan tetap bagus sampai sekarang.

Pada saat – saat tersebut, Portnoy, Petrucci dan Myung masih berkutat dengan kuliah mereka, juga dengan kerja paruh waktu dan mengajar. Jadwal mereka menjadi kiat ketat sehingga mereka harus memutuskan antara mengejar karir di bidang musik atau mengakhiri band Majesty. Namun akhirnya Majesty menang dan mereka bertiga keluar dari Berklee untuk berkonsentrasi di karir musik. Petrucci mengomentari tentang hal ini di dokumentasi DVD Score, berkata bahwa saat tersebut sangat susah untuk meminta kepada orang tuanya untuk pergi ke sekolah musik. Dan lebih susah lagi untuk menyakinkan orang tuanya agar ia boleh keluar dari sekolah.

Moore juga akhirnya keluar dari sekolahnya, SUNY Fredonia, untuk berkonsentrasi dengan band tersebut.

Karakteristik penulisan lagu
Beberapa teknik penulisan lagu yang unik telah dilakukan oleh Dream Theater, yang kebanyakan terjadi di masa – masa sekarang, ketika mereka bisa bereksperimen dengan label rekaman mereka sendiri.

Dimulai dengan Train of Thought, Dream Theater sudah memulai memasukkan elemen – elemen kecil dan tersembunyi di musik mereka, dan memuat elemen tersebut kepada peminat yang lebih fanatik. Karakteristik yang paling terkenal (yang biasa disebut “nugget”) tersembunyi di “In the Name of God”, yang merupakan sandi morse dari “eat my ass and balls” (makan pantatku dan penisku), yang merupakan kata – kata terkenal dari Mike Portnoy. Penggunaan notasi yang berulang – ulang juga digunakan, yang sudah dikenal dari lagu – lagu Charles Ives, contohnya:
Tema lagu “Wait for Sleep” muncul di “Learning to Live” (menit 8:11) dan juga muncul dua kali di “Just Let Me Breath” (menit 3:39 dan 5:21)
Tema lagu “Learning to Live” muncul di “Another Day” (menit 2:53)
Tema lagu “Space-Dye Vest” digunakan beberapa kali di album Awake.
Tema pembukaan dari “Erotomania” digunakan di “Voices” di Awake (menit 4:51).
Satu dari melodi – melodi di “Metropolis Pt 1 (The Miracle and the Sleeper)” diulang di chorus kedua di “Home” dari Metropolis Pt 2 (Scenes From A Memory), dengan cuma pengubahan satu kata. Beberapa lirik dari “Metropolis Pt 1″ just digunakan di “Home”. Pada dasarnya, keseluruhan album “Scenes From A Memory” penuh dengan musikal/lirikal/konseptual variasi dari elemen – elemen musikal dari “Metropolis Pt 1″ dan “The Dance of Eternity” sebenarnya dibangun dari variasi – variasi elemen musik di lagu – lagu dalam album tersebut.
Bagian – baguan dari tiap lagu di album “Octavarium” telah digunakan di bagian kelima dari lagu berjudul sama, “Octavarium”.
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, studio album ke enam mereka, memuat enam lagu dan mempunyai karakter – karakter angka enam di judul – judul lagunya. Train of Thought, studio album ke tujuh mereka, memuat tujuh lagu. Octavarium, studio album ke delapan mereka memuat delapan lagu dan judul albumnya diambil dari kata octo, yang merupakan kata Latin yang berarti delapan, berarti satu oktaf dari istilah musik, yang mana merupakan jarak dari satu not ke not lain adalah delapan not di tangga nada diatonik. Judul lagi dari CD ini adalah 24 menit, kelipatan dari 8. Halaman depan albumnya juga memuat karakter – karakter yang berhubungan dengan 5 dan 8. Contohnya, satu set dari kotak – kotak putih dan kotak – kotak hitam, mempunyai arti satu oktaf dari piano.
Lagu “Octavarium” dulunya ingin diakhiri dengan seruling yang bergema serupa dengan awalan lagu tersebut. Namun diganti dengan not piano yang sama dari awalan album Octavarium. John Petrucci is one best guitarist on the worlds. Im big fan of dream theater. I have all of the album and the recent Systematic Chaos. John Petrucci had many guitars, im very interested on his Ibanez JPM, ,but we dont talk it now, because he’s no longer endorsed by Ibanez. Now he use Ernie Ball Music Man John Petrucci Signature guitar. Petrucci worked very closely with Ernie Ball Guitars to develop a guitar that had a new level of style and practicality. The guitar comes in both 6 and 7 string versions and can be purchased with or without a piezo bridge. The body of the guitar has a sculpted neck joint for better access to the high frets and a contoured top for better picking arm support.

The guitar features a basswood body with a maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. 24 wide high profile frets are lined with custom inlays including a “JP” just above the first fret. All Petrucci Signature models come with Music Man bridges and saddles.
